NIA & SIT to probe vandalism in State during anti-CAA protest: Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: The government has received lots of video and telephonic evidences of conspiracies hatched to burn the Janata Bhawan during the anti-CAA stir. Instructions to the persons involved in those activities were being given by a leading academician of the State from a room of a Central government organization with which he is associated. A section of Congress was also involved in those incidents. Evidences have also been received of the PFI (Popular Front of India) being involved. Against this backdrop, the government has handed over the entire case to NIA (National Investigation Agency).

Disclosing this to media, Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Besides, these incidents at the Janata Bhawan, the government has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Mridulananda Sarma, DIG, Assam Police, to investigate all cases of arson in Guwahati where evidences have been culled of the involvement of some people from Lower Assam districts like Nalbari, Barpeta, and Dhubri.” He added, “The State government has also requested the Government of India to depute a senior official of the CBI or NIA to help the SIT team.”

Dwelling on the incident of arson in front of the Janata Bhawan, Minister Sarma stated, “We’ve already got video footage of the involvement of the president of Assam Youth Congress, Kamrul Islam. A section of the Congress has been also been involved in arson and violence across the State.

“I’ll proceed to Delhi tomorrow, and request Union Home Minister Amit Shah to institute a CBI probe into the involvement of Congress and PIF members in the vandalism incidents across the State in the name of anti-CAA movement.”

The Minister also pointed out, “After viewing the footages of arson and violence during this time across the State, we’re sure that no member of the AASU or other student organizations was involved.
