No Missive From Centre: State Pension Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury

Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI: The State government employees have been shaky over the past few days over a rumour doing the rounds that ‘the Centre has taken a decision to make superannuation of Central government employees at 33 years of service or 60 years of age, whichever comes first’. If this rumour has any truth in it, a person getting a Central government job at the age of 18 years will have to retire at the age 51 years. The State Government employees apprehend that Dispur may emulate the Central government on this rule for superannuation of employees. At present the retirement age of employees under the Assam Government and the Central Government is 60, irrespective of the durations of their services.

To get the air clear over the matter, The Sentinel felt it is imperative on its part to talk to State Pension and Public Grievances Minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury. Talking to The Sentinel on Wednesday, Choudhury said, “We haven’t received any communication from the Centre on any decision for making the superannuation of employees either 33 years of service or 60 years of age, whichever comes first.”

The Centre has already denied the rumours circulating in the social media about the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) having given clearance to a proposal for reducing the superannuation age of Central government employees with effect from April 2020. The Central government, according to reports in the media, said that the rumours are unfounded and baseless.
