NRC Sample Re-Verifications: Memos From Bodies Affixed In Petition

GUWAHATI: The next hearing by the Supreme Court of India on the petition filed by the State and the Central governments seeking sample re-verifications of the complete draft NRC in some districts is going to be very crucial as it puts a question mark on the final NRC. The Supreme Court has already ordered the NRC authority to publish the final NRC on July 31, 2019.

In the joint petition, the governments have affixed the memorandums of 22 organizations who have suspected the inclusion of people having doubtful nationalities in the complete draft National Register of Citizens. A few organizations, on the other hand, say that the names of some original inhabitants (OI) of Assam have been missing from the complete draft National Register of Citizens. The organizations that moved Dispur with memorandums are the AJYCP; the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam; the All Dimasa Students’ Union; the Assam Public Works; the Sachetan Nagarik Mancha, Assam; the Hindu Jagaran Mancha, to name a few.

The petitioners (State and Central governments) have sought sample re-verification on three points – 20% in districts bordering Bangladesh, districts from where there are reports of high population growth; and 10% sample re-verification in the remaining districts of the State.

Out of 3,29,91,384 applicants who had applied for inclusion in the National Register of Citizens; while names of 2,89,83,677 appeared in the complete draft National Register of Citizens, about 40.07 lakh people were found ineligible for inclusion.
