Rumi-carlifter nexus gets murkier

Guwahati, April 4: Congress MLA from Borkhola Dr Rumi th's proximity to notorious car lifter Anil Chauhan, who was arrested in Guwahati on Thursday night, has spurred another controversy.

Official sources today told The Sentinel that the controversial MLA had earlier lodged a verbal complaint with a senior police officer, alleging that his sub-ordite officers were "unnecessarily harassing" Chauhan.

In fact, Dr th had submitted a written complaint at the Chief Minister’s official residence against two police officers, who she said, were harassing Chauhan.

The legislator has come under further scrutiny after it was revealed that it was on her recommendation that an Assembly pass was issued for Chauhan’s Bolero vehicle.

The Bolero vehicle was seized from Chauhan’s Dwarka Sixth Mile residence by police yesterday.

Assembly principal secretary GP Das today issued a showcause notice to her in this regard and said Speaker Prab Kumar Gogoi has directed an inquiry into the matter.

According to Das, Rumi th had on May, 2013 recommended an Assembly

pass for the vehicle (a Bolero with registration number AS01 MA 5917), but it was stated in the recommendation that Rumi th herself was the owner of the vehicle and Anil Chauhan was the driver.

The following year in September, th, while recommending renewal of the Assembly pass, stated that the vehicle (same registration number) is owned by Anil Chauhan and the driver was one Milon Rabha.

The MLA had also recommended renewal of the Assembly pass this year in January. However, this time, the registration number of the vehicle was stated to be AS01 MA 5197. The owner was Anil Chauhan and driver Milon Rabha.

“We have issued a showcause notice to her on the directions of the Speaker. She has been asked to reply by April 8,” Das said.

Sources said that Assam Police, especially the city police, was on the look-out for Chauhan for several years now. Police has stumbled upon his me several times while investigating cases of car lifting.

Traps were laid in the well-guarded Guwahati residence of Chauhan, but police were uble to b him till Thursday.

It is learnt that Chauhan was close to th’s estranged husband Jakie and that is how he came in touch with the legislator.

Declared a Proclaimed Offender by several courts in Delhi and a fugitive by Delhi Police, Chauhan has to his me over 3,500 cases of car lifting in the country.

This is the fifth time that Chauhan has been arrested. Police had found the mes of some senior lawyers in Chauhan’s mobile phone log.

It is learnt that besides car-lifting, waylaying of trucks, smuggling of wildlife and weapons, Chauhan was also engaged in some contract works in Morigaon.

The notorious crimil is origilly a resident of South Delhi. Since 2005, he set up bases in Kolkata and the Northeast after being declared a proclaimed offender. He had kept the police in several states on their toes.
