Turnout The First Phase of panchayat Poll in 42 Poll Stations

GUWAHATI: The voters’ turnout of the first phase of panchayat poll in the State has risen to 80 per cent. The turnout may go up as repoll will be held in 42 polling stations, 27 in Lakhimpur district alone.

Talking to The Sentinel, State Election Commissioner (SEC) HN Bora said: “Repoll will be held on December 7 in three polling stations in Kamrup district, one polling station in Biswanath district, two polling stations in Gohpur sub-division, two polling stations in Dhakuakhana sub-division, three polling stations in Dhemaji district, two polling stations in Sivasagar district, one polling station in Titabor sub-division and one polling station in Charaideo district. Repoll will be held on December 10 in 27 polling stations in Lakhimpur district.”

Bora further said: “Repolling has been ordered mostly for anomalies in electoral rolls and misprinting of party symbols in ballot papers.”

When asked on the voters’ turnout out, Bora said: “While Darrang district has recorded the highest turnout of 81.5 per cent, Sadia subdivision recorded the lowest turnout of 65.5 per cent. While Majuli has recorded 78.81 per cent polling, Kaliabor subdivision recorded 80.56 per cent, Kamrup (M) 71.3 per cent and Kamrup 79.09 per cent. Now we’re preparing for the second phase of the poll.”

Meanwhile, campaign for the second phase of the poll will conclude on Friday. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass, AGP president Atul Bora, former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, APCC president Ripun Bora and AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal, among others, were the heavyweights who campaigned for the second phase of the rural poll on Thursday.

The ten districts where the second phase of the rural poll is going to be held on December 9 are Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai, Karimganj, South Salmara-Mankachar and Nalbari.
