Two kids die as school vehicle falls into river

Guwahati, Sept 10:  Two children were killed when a school vehicle carrying 26 students fell into a river near Pathsala in Barpeta district.

The incident took place at Denbari under Bhavanipur police station.

The students belonged to Xarbojonin Jatiya Vidyalaya.

The cruiser vehicle, in which the students were being ferried to school, fell into Phumari river at a turning.

Immediately after the incident, local youths launched a rescue operation, but could not save two kids. The deceased were identified as Rafiqul Haque (12) and Rahul Amin (9). Locals clashed with police protesting lack of traffic regulations in the area. Two policemen were injured while trying to prevent a mob from torching the cruiser vehicle which was fished out later. Police opened a mild cane-charge to disperse the irate mob. Locals said the schools authorities were intimated about the poor condition of the vehicle several times in the past, but no action was taken. Some even alleged that the driver of the vehicle, who is absconding, was drunk.

The Transport department has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident.
