US okays 'chloroquine' an anti-malarial drug to treat coronavirus

WASHINGTON: The USA on Thursday approved 'chloroquine' -- an anti-malarial drug -- for use as a treatment against the new coronavirus, said US President Donald Trump.

“We’re going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately, and that’s where the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has been so great,” Trump told reporters. “They’ve gone through the approval process -- it’s been approved. They took it down from many, many months to immediate. So we’re going to be able to make that drug available by prescription.” (Agencies)
