ELECTORS’ VERIFICATION PROGRAMME

Several districts yet to come up with satisfactory response

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: Voters of several districts in Assam — including Kamrup (Metro) — have not come up with a satisfactory response to the important ‘Electors’ Verification Programme’ (EVP). To tackle the issue, the Election department of Assam has directed the District Election Officers (DEOs) to depute Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) for house-to-house verification of those voters who are yet to enroll themselves online. This measure has been taken following a directive of the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Talking to The Sentinel, Assam Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Mukesh Chandra Sahoo said, “All electors can enroll themselves online by downloading the voters’ helpline mobile app either from Google Playstore or through the official website: https://www.nvsp.in. The EVP should be done within November 18.”

Sources informed that 85 percent of the State’s total voters have verified themselves so far. The districts that have shown rather poor response to the ECI initiative are Kamrup (Metro) with only 64% followed by Kamrup (70%); Sonitpur (74%); Morigaon and Darrang (76% each).

With reference to the poor response of electors to the ECI’s online registration particularly in Kamrup (M), sources informed that in many instances, the BLOs could not identify the locations of electors. Besides, some electors have changed their residences.

On the other hand, the districts of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong have topped the list with cent percent electors’ verification. Similarly, eight Assembly constituencies have shown 100% electors’ verification. These are Batadrava, Digboi, Diphu, Golaghat, Haflong, Howraghat, Lahoal, and Tinsukia.

The EVP is a scope given to electors so that they can themselves correct any errors in their respective photo electoral rolls. New eligible voters can also apply for enrolling themselves through this programme.

The ECI has decided that in addition to the already approved seven documents — passport, driving license, Aadhaar, ration card, identity card for government/semi-government officials, bank passbooks, and farmer’s identity card; three more documents will also be used for authentication of electors’ details.

These documents are the — PAN card, smart card issued by RGI (Registrar General of India) under NPR (National Population Register); and the latest water/telephone/electricity/ gas connection bill for that address, either in the name of the name of the applicant or that of his/her immediate relation like parents among others.
