Flood claims first victim

GUWAHATI: The season's first wave of flood claimed one life at Rongjuli in Goalpara district on Tuesday even as 2,71,655 people have been affected in 321 villages of 21 Revenue Circles across 11 districts of Barpeta, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Hojai, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Tinsukia, and West Karbi Anglong.

The Brahmaputra, Jia Bharali, and Puthimari rivers are flowing above the danger levels at Neamatighat in Jorhat district, NH Rd in Sonitpur, and NH Rd in Kamrup district respectively, stated a bulletin of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

So far, the highest number of 2, 15,476 people have been affected in Goalpara district, followed by 22, 332 in Nalbari, and 10,770 people in Nagaon district. Altogether 16,720 people are residing in 51 relief camps in three districts of Nalbari, Goalpara, and Tinsukia.

The total crop area affected is 2,678 hectare. SDRF and NDRF personnel are using boats to rescue marooned people.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday reviewed flood situation in the State at a meeting with the officials of ASDMA and top officials of various other departments here. The Chief Minister directed for ensuring all COVID-19 protocols like social distancing, hand washing, wearing of masks among others in the flood relief camps so that community spread of COVID-19 cases can be contained during the flood season.
