GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has extended the ongoing lockdown in the entire Kamrup (Metropolitan) district for a week on the basis of recommendations of the Health department.

While addressing a press conference at Janata Bhawan here on Saturday, Health & Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that even though the 'nagarik samities' (citizens' committees) of Guwahati had recommended extension of the lockdown for two weeks, the Health department has sent recommendations to the State Chief Secretary to extend the lockdown for one week. He said the prime objective of lockdown extension is to flatten the curve of COVID-19 positive cases in Guwahati.

Sarma further said that the daily average rate of COVID-19 infection in the city has already come down to 21 per cent during the last days of the present lockdown. The daily rate of infection in Guwahati was 30 per cent on June 29 (prior to lockdown), he said.

"Extension of the lockdown for a week will further bring down the infection rates. After a week, the city is expected to witness 5 to 6 per cent infection rate. The Health department has already conducted 1 lakh COVID tests in Guwahati. The government hospitals and COVID Care Centres are admitting around 650 new positive patients every day. At the same we are discharging 450 patients daily. There is no scarcity of beds and we have 1000 beds extra at this moment," Sarma said, adding the death rate of COVID patients is 0.23 per cent in the State.

Minister Sarma also said that the Health department has so far conducted 5.25 COVID tests in the State. He pointed out that his department is closely monitoring the situation in Cachar, Golaghat, Jorhat and Barpeta districts due to the rise in COVID-positive cases.
