GUWAHATI: The Assam Government will start the cashless healthcare facilities up to Rs 5 lakh annually for NFSA (National Food Security Act) cardholders in the state at the beginning of the Financial Year 2023–24. Dispur took this decision following an advisory note from the Central Government.

According to State Health Department sources, Mukhya Matri Ayushman Asom Yojana (MMAAY) has the objective of achieving the government’s long-term goal of ensuring that every citizen has access to affordable and quality healthcare. The State Annual Budget presented in the State Assembly on March 16 has an allocation of Rs 135 crore on this yojana.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to arrive in the state on April 15 for the mega Bihu dance recital and the inauguration of the AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) at Changsari. The government has a plan afoot to get the MMAAY launched with the Prime Minister during this visit, if everything goes as planned.

The State Health Department has already started the e-KYC (Know Your Customer) programme to issue cashless healthcare facility cards among the beneficiaries. Sources in the department said that the people who have Atal Amrit Cards can also avail of the cashless healthcare facilities. This facility will give the beneficiaries access to the government hospitals in the state and some empaneled private hospitals in the state and outside the state.
