GUWAHATI: Two top leaders of the BPF (Bodoland People's Front) – Biswajit Daimary and MLA Emmanuel Mosahary – have joined the BJP. This development is being viewed as a shot in the arm of the BJP at a time when informal campaigning for the 2021 Assembly election in the State has already started.

While Daimary — former working president of the BPF — resigned as a Rajya Sabha MP on Saturday, Mosahary is yet to resign as an MLA. The joining ceremony was held at the Chief Minister's official residence at Kharguli in the presence of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass and party's national general secretary Dilip Saikia.

Sonowal welcomed both the tribal leaders to the BJP, and hoped that their joining would benefit the party.

Since 2016, the BPF has been the ruling partner of the BJP in the State. It is also a member of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).

However, both the BJP and the BPF have fielded candidates against each other in the BTC election to be held on December 7 and 10.
