GUWAHATI: Bangladesh's Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has asserted that the Bangladesh Government shows no tolerance towards radical or jihadi elements in its territory.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Asian Confluence River Conclave 2022 here on Saturday, Momen that the North-east is peaceful today because the Bangladesh Government took tough action at one point of time against militants from the region who were taking shelter in his country.

Regarding the recent arrest of some Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) jihadis in Assam, Momen said that such arrests mark a welcome development. He accepted that such radical elements may exist in some isolated pockets in Bangladesh, but policy-wise Dhaka is against such activities. He said that he is not aware of the ABT, but assured that he will look into the matter once he returns to Bangladesh.

Momen said that the Indo-Bangladesh friendship is rock solid and India has been helping his country right from 1971. As such, the Bangladesh Government will not allow any activities on its soil which can harm India.

He said that thousands of Indians are working in various sectors in Bangladesh, contributing to all service sectors, and Bangladesh is the fourth-highest remittance-earning country for India.

He also said that currently Bangladesh is hosting more than 1.1 million 'Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals' in the Cox Bazar area.

"I am talking about massive influx of Myanmarese nationals in Bangladesh who have been forcefully pushed out of their country and Bangladesh is providing them with food and shelter on humanitarian grounds for years. This has posed a threat to the ongoing development trajectory in Bangladesh."
