Encroached xatra lands: Xatra panel's report almost final

STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI: The report (interim) of the Xatra Commission is almost final. The commission will submit its report to the Chief Minister after the Durga Puja.

Though the commission has not disclosed the content of its interim report, its members said during their field visits that the ground situation convinced them that 'the lands of some xatras in the state are under encroachment'.

Thus, the quantum of encroached xatra lands in the state will be one of the components of the report. After submitting the interim report, the Xatra Commission will conduct field visits to a few other xatras. It will submit its final report to the Chief Minister later. It has already visited 12 districts in the state.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma formed the Xatra Commission to ascertain the quantum of encroached xatra lands in the state. The Chief Minister had to take such a move as the quantum of encroached xatra land claimed by xatras and the quantum claimed by district administrations differ widely.

The chairman of the Xatra Commission is MLA Pradip Hazarika, and MLAs Mrinal Saikia and Rupak Sarmav are members.
