Fancy Bazar traders 'funding' drug cartels

GUWAHATI: A section of traders in the main business hub of the State finance the drug cartels operating in the city. This was revealed following the arrest of SonuAgarwal, a businessman of Fancy Bazar here by the Crime Branch of Guwahati Police on Thursday.

Acting on a tipoff of suspected 'finance-links' between businessmen and drug cartels in the city, a Police team detained Agarwal in the morning. After interrogation at the Police Station, Agarwal was arrested. Sources informed that Agarwal deals with the supply and sale of various dry-fruit items.

Earlier on November 25, a joint team of Basistha Police and Crime Branch had arrested a person identified as Sankar Das after seizing a huge amount of drugs from his possession. At that time, Sankar was in his car (AS 25 BC 8438) at Patarkuchi under Basistha Police Station. After carrying out a search operation, a total of 624 gram of narcotics concealed in 51 soap cases were revovered from within that vehicle. In this regard, a case (1668/20) has been registered in the Basistha Police Station.

The Crime Branch arrested Agarwal after Sankar Das revealed his name. Meanwhile, a resident of Bharalumukh identified as VinayakSyamsukha was also grilled by the Crime branch during the day.
