GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court expects the Assam government to adhere to the timeframe for constituting the Mental Health Review Boards. A divisional bench of the High Court comprising Justice N Kotiswar Singh and Justice Malasri Nandi directed the State Government to form Mental Health Review Boards and make them functional at the earliest under provisions to Rule 17 of the Mental Health Care (Central Mental Health Authority and Mental Health Review Boards) Rules, 2018.

Appearing for the government, Advocate General D Saikia submitted that the State Government would appraise the progress of the recruitment process after a month.

The High Court stated during the hearing that it "expects that the State Government would adhere to the timeframe so that such Boards are constituted and made functional at the earliest".

On February 25, 2021, the High Court had directed the State Government to set up mental health review boards within 45 days. The government did not constitute any such boards within the stipulated time for various reasons, including the Covid-19. The government has given advertisements seeking applications from eligible candidates to form mental health review boards.
