GUWAHATI: In the latest instance of a series of breakthroughs in Assam Police's war against drugs, Guwahati police on Monday seized 500 gm of heroin from the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Betkuchi. The market value of the narcotic is estimated to be about Rs. 4 crore.

The seizure was made from an abandoned bus by a special squad led by Joint Commissioner of Police Partha Sarathi Mahanta.

One person identified as Toser Ali alias Salam Ali has been arrested in this connection. The arrested person hails from Bandhali in Barpeta district. According to police sources, the consignment of heroin is believed to have been sent from Manipur and it was meant to be distributed by Toser Ali mainly in Lower Assam. The Garchuk police have registered a case (No.2/2022 U/S 22(C)of NDPS Act).

In around eight months from May 10 to December 26, 2021, the Assam Police had arrested 3,162 persons against 1,846 cases registered under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The police also recovered drugs and other banned substances worth around Rs 342.77 crore. The seized substances included 55.595 kg of heroin; 13044.30787 kg of ganja; 40.05075 kg of opium; 1,36,679 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup; 27,94,184 pieces of tablets/capsules; 3.5601 kg of morphine; 3,314 kg of poppy straw; 3.375 kg of crystal Methamphetamine; 0.29261 kg of cocaine and 213.935 kg of cannabis plant. They also seized 165 vehicles during the period.

Besides these, the police also recovered Rs 2,23,35,278 Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) with a face value of Rs 36,800, besides foreign currencies. The police destroyed cannabis-cultivated areas covering 31 bighas during the period.
