Information: Licence for business in food products

Food licence is a must for running any food-product business. Anyone willing to run such a business has to register under the 'Food Safety and Standard Authority of India' (FSSAI) to manufacture, distribute and transport food products.

The FSSAI is under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. FSSAI certificates and licences ensure quality, purity and other important factors of food products. FSSAI issues three different types of food licences – central licence, State licence and basic registration.

The documents required to be submitted for basic registration, State and Central licences are – passport, photo identity card, list of equipment, NOC (no-objection certificate) from municipality, list of directors/partners and a water test report.

The application fee for basic registration of a business establishment with an annual turnover below Rs 12 lakh is Rs 100. While the application fee under the State licence category for an establishment with an annual turnover of above Rs 12 lakh but below Rs 20 crore is Rs 2,000-5,000, the application fee for Central licence of an establishment of above Rs 20,000-crore annual turnover is Rs 7,500.
