NAGAON: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the BJP would continue its mission to make Assam free from floods, infiltration, corruption and agitation in the next five years. He asserted that the mission would make Assam one of the top developed States in the country.

"Assam, once known for agitation and violence, is marching forward on the path of development under the leadership of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. People now know Assam for investments being made in various sectors including education and tourism," said Shah.

Shah's assertion about futuristic development and prosperous Assam came while he inaugurated the auspicious beginning of the project to beautify Batadraba Than, the birth place of Srimanta Sankardev, the cultural and spiritual icon at a function held at Batadraba in Nagaon.

Shah while paying his rich tributes to Srimanta Sankardev said that starting his devout journey from Assam, the Vaishnavite saint could spread his culture and philosophy to the entire country. He said that the spiritual giant not only spread his devout culture, he strengthened the unity and integrity of the whole country.

He also said that Srimanta Sankardev played a great role in unifying the North East culturally and spiritually with the rest of the nation.

Referring to 'Father of the Nation' who also said that Sankardev's teachings and philosophy helped in creating a Ram Rajya, Shah added that it the duty of the ruler to look after weak, poor and marginalised sections of the society – a tenet which is also the essence of Sankardev's philosophy.

Amit Shah further said that the State government's efforts in making an ideal memorial at the birth place of Srimanta Sankardev involving a financial outlay of Rs 180 crore is really praiseworthy.

During the function, the Union Home Minister also remembered the role of the freedom fighters from Nagaon who laid down their lives for the cause of Independence. Hailing the State's first Chief Minister Gopinath Bardoloi's contribution to retain Assam with India, Shah said that otherwise the people of Assam would have lost the privilege to be with India. He also hailed Hima Das and Angarag Mahanta for their contributions.

Pointing out that though Assam, along with the other States of the North East, were known for their agitational programmes, Shah said that Prime Minister Modi unleashed a series of schemes which brought North East to the agenda of priorities. He also said that it is because of the Centre's importance to North East that music maestro Bhupen Hazarika was given the 'Bharat Ratna' and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was given 'Padma Bhusan' posthumously. He also said that it is because of the Centre's attention to North East, several insurgent groups came to the mainstream of the society after laying down their arms. He also mentioned about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visits to North East which he made record number of 35 times.

Stating that the recurrent floods in Assam have had their disastrous impact, Shah said that in the next five years government would give succor to the people of Assam completely from the perennial flood.

Launching a veiled attack on the newly formed regional parties Shah alleged that these parties "apparent objective" to help the Congress win the upcoming Assembly polls.

"Those who led the Assam Agitation have formed political parties with different names to cut the votes of the BJP. Their goal is to help the Congress, which fired on and killed hundreds of youth during that agitation, win the elections," Shah said.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal while speaking on the occasion said that without Srimanta Sankardev and Srimanta Madhabdev, Assam cannot make its presence felt at the global stage. It is because of the unparallel role of the Gurujonas, people of Assam have been in a position to promote their culture, tradition, spiritualism etc to the world stage, Sonowal said.

Health, Finance, PWD & Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma termed the day as very important. Speaking at the function, he also said that the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah for inaugurating the construction of beautification work of Batadraba Than has made the people of Assam happy.
