GUWAHATI: With many COVID hospitals across Assam filled to their capacities, the State Health and Family Welfare department is readying more such hospitals.

Already the MMCH (Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital), and the TB Hospital at Kahilipara that has been converted into a COVID Hospital are filled to their capacities. COVID-19 patients are now being admitted to the COVID Hospital at Sonapur. The department, on the other hand, is ready with a new 200-bed COVID hospital in front of the GMCH and a 100-bed one at the Ayurvedic College, besides a 40-bed hospital at Jagiroad. Patients will be admitted to the 200-bed new hospital from May 29.

With 101 new corona cases reported on Wednesday, the total number of cases in the State is 783. In the past ten days, over 600 corona cases have been reported in the State.

An air passenger coming to Guwahati from Hyderabad via Delhi has also tested COVID positive. This is first of its kind so far. Her co-passengers who sat near her during the sortie have been identified for COVID test.

Meanwhile, most of the people who had returned from Chennai have tested corona positive, and the majority of them are from Golaghat district. As many as 126 such people have tested corona positive. Insofar as corona positive cases are concerned, Golaghat district tops the list, followed by Hojai, Kamrup (M), Nagaon, Karimganj and Cachar.

Meanwhile, a section of Chennai-returnee corona patients has been creating unpleasant situations in Golaghat since Tuesday. Talking to The Sentinel, Golaghat Deputy Commissioner Bibhas Modi said, "Some returnees from Chennai have been creating situations over the quality of food and facilities since their arrival. According to rules, we can file FIRs against them or increase their quarantine period."

Commenting on the situation in Golaghat district, State Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "None of the returnees is attending a wedding party. All should be within rules. If anybody has anything to complain, he/she can lodge it politely. They, however, cannot team up to raise protests, violating social distancing. Such behaviour on their part will compel us to follow the legal course.

"Hospitals are full to their capacities, and we're readying new ones. After 14 days, some hospital beds will be vacated as the patients will be discharged.

"A cancer patient, Bonti Saikia, had gone for treatment to Delhi where she tested corona positive. After her recovery from corona she returned to Assam. However, she has tested corona positive again. Sometimes, false test results are shown. We've sent her test report to the ICMR (Indian Council of Medical Research). There are reports of such false corona positive reports in other States and countries as well. Let's wait for the ICMR report."
