RAGGING CASE: Dibrugarh University expels four students, suspends three wardens

DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh University Anti-Ragging Committee expelled four students of the university for three years for their involvement in ragging. The committee has barred them from admission to any institution during the three-year expulsion period. The committee also suspended three hostel wardens.

The expelled students are Galab Deka (3rd Semester in Life Science), Kamaleshwar Chutia (3rd Semester in Mathematics), Museum Phukan (3rd Semester in Applied Geo Physics) and Pusang Kham Boruah (2nd year in Tai Language).

"In pursuance of the recommendations of the Anti-Ragging Committee in its meeting held on November 30 and after the establishment of guilt and in consideration of the recommendations of the Anti-Ragging Squad (ARS), the four students of Dibrugarh University have been punished as per the Clause 7 (B) (IX) of Dibrugarh University Regulations for Prohibiting Ragging and Anti-Ragging Measures," Dibrugarh University said in a statement. The Dibrugarh University authority has also suspended three wardens of Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Chatra Nivas (PNGB). The warderns are Dibojoti Dutta, Abu Mustak Hussian and Palash Dutta.

Talking to media persons, Dibrugarh University Vice-Chancellor Prof Jiten Hazarika said, "I have suspended all the three wardens of the hostel and have instituted a high-level inquiry committee to probe the matter."

On the other hand, Dibrugarh police on Wednesday arrested another accused allegedly involved in the Dibrugarh University ragging incident. The accused is Subhrojyoti Baruah (a 3rd-semester student of Political Science).

The police also picked up another person on the charge of providing shelter to an accused, Nabo Kumar Newar.

"Till now, four students involved in the ragging incident were arrested. Our search operation is on to nab Rahul Chetri, the prime accused," Dibrugarh Additional SP(HQ) Bitul Chetia said.
