GUWAHATI: The recruitment of college principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff members is on the way to centralization. The State Government is going to constitute a board for the selection of candidates for such posts. Over the years, the selection of college teachers has been the domain of college governing bodies.

The State Government has taken this decision to make the selection process hassle-free through a single-window mechanism.

Speaking to The Sentinel, State Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said, “In the existing system, the colleges advertise their vacancies, and the candidates have to apply separately to the colleges. It happens sometimes that two or more colleges select the same candidate or candidates. Since a candidate joins only one of the colleges of his choice, the other colleges have to advertise again to fill their vacancies. It takes time and makes the colleges suffer. The candidates also have to face interviews in all the colleges.”

He said, “The State Cabinet took a decision on March 16 to centralize the selection of college principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff by constituting the Assam College Service Recruitment Board. This will be a relief for the candidates from the hassles of applying to multiple colleges. The board will provide a single window for recruitment. It will help avoid the selection of the same candidate for various posts. The board will collect the number of vacancies in the colleges and advertise the vacancies centrally. The candidates will have to apply once to all the colleges. After the interview, the board will prepare the selection list and send it to the government, which will verify the list and issue appointment letters.”

When asked as to when the new system will come into effect, the minister said, “We need to introduce a Bill in the State Assembly to amend the existing college teachers and non-teaching staff recruitment Act. After the passage of the Bill, the Act will be amended, leading to the issuance of a new notification to make the system effective.”
