Himanta Biswa, Several Others File Nominations for Phase 3 of Assam Polls

With nominations filing for Phase III (the final phase) of Assam Polls coming to a close on March 19 many of the candidates filed their papers on Friday.

Assam Finance, Health, Education and PWD minister Himanta Biswa Sarma filing nominations was the highlight of the day. Sarma was accompanied by Assam CM Sarbanada Sonowal, Manipur CM N Biren Singh and other senior ministers and party leaders. A procession with thousands of Sarma's supporters covered about 3 km from Sonaram High School field to the Kamrup (Metropolitan) Deputy Commissioner's office, where Sarma filed his papers. He will be contesting from his home turf of Jalukbari.

Congress party's East Guwahati candidate, Ashima Bordoloi (grand-daughter of Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi, freedon fighter and first Chief Minister of Assam), and Mira Borthakur, the Congress candidate from the West Guwahati seat filed their nomination papers on Friday.

Diwakh Phukan, a Raijor Dal candidate filed his papers to contest from the East Guwahati Constituency

Manjit Mahanta, senior journalist and candidate of Anchalik Gana Morcha filed his papers to contest from the Dispur Constituency.

Raktimabhu Swamy and Swapnali Das filed nominations papers as Independent candidates from the West Guwahati seat.
