Putting Their Lives at Risk, Villagers Use Rickety Bamboo Bridge to Cross a River in Assam

It is over two years and the Bortola Ghat bridge connecting Mankachar and Kalapani Diara in Mancachar district of Assam is still not ready. In the video, it is visible that only the concrete pillars are standing and no work has been done. The colour of the cement on the pillars shows how long back the pillars were constructed. The AASU local members have requested the new government and the administration to expedite the construction work and complete the bridge urgently. The bamboo bridge that the people are using to commute is rickety and so narrow that a bike and even a single person cannot cross at the same time.

The members of All Assam Students Union (AASU), Assam's apex students body has demanded immediate completion of the bridge to avoid the inconvenience of the locals. The AASU members said that the sideway that has been made to help people commute is not a safe and permanent one. It could break away or collapse any time and with floods just round the corner, the concrete bridge should be made ready.
