The Sentinel Assam: Swahid Diwas
(Martyrs Day) 10 Jan 2021
December 10 is celebrated as Swahid Diwas (Martyrs Day) every year to honour the memory of martyrs like Khargeswar Talukdar who laid down their lives during the Assam agitation between 1979-1985.
On this day in 1979 Khargeswar Talukdar became the first martyr of the Assam agitation at Bhabanipur, Barpeta district.
Assam agitation was held against the influx of Bangladeshis into the state. As many as 855 people of Assam laid down their lives.
On Martyrs’ Day today, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal launched the construction work of the Swahid Smarak Park (Martyrs Memorial Park)
The 'Axom Andolanar Tathyakosh' (a database along with photographs of the movement) was also launched to mark the Day.
