ITANAGAR: A large number of mithuns have been affected by 'FMD' (Foot and Mouth Disease) in various parts of Arunachal Pradesh and a few have even died, said official sources on Monday.

Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department Deputy director DrTabaHeli, a top mithun expert of North Eastern region, informed that the disease has taken a severe form in the entire Siang belt -- particularly in East Siang, West Siang and Upper Siang districts.

Though the number of deaths is yet to be known, the disease has spread in scattered areas of Papum Pare district also. The Department has allocated district-wise funds for procurement of medicines to take all possible steps to contain the disease, he said.

Department Minister TageTaki said that he had an indepth meeting on the matter with Director Dr N.G. Minto and trying all possible measures to contain the spread of the disease.

Expressing strong concern, senior vice president of State BJP TarhTarak said that the FMD has taken an epidemic form as mithun deaths have been reported from Itanagar and Jullang area near here. Informing that reports of more mithun casualties are pouring in, he resented that no medicine is reportedly available in the lone dispensary at Itanagar.

Pointing out that mihtuns are pride of indigenous people of the State, Nyishi Elite Society president BengiaTolum has urged the Department to take all possible steps to save them.
