Dutta, M’Tem chosen for prestigious awards

GUWAHATI, December 31: The last day of 2014 saw two eminent persons – Hirendra th Dutta and Kulachandra M’Tem – being conferred two prestigious awards for their contributions in the field of literature and art.

Renowned poet and Sahitya Akademi Award winner Hirendra th Dutta has been chosen for the prestigious 25th Assam Valley Literary Award for the year 2014.

On the other hand, Manipur–born Kulachandra M’Tem has been chosen for the Prab Barua Art Award for the the year 2014 for his contribution in the field of art.

It may be mentioned that the Assam Valley Literary Award, which is a part of the Williamson Magor Education Trust’s endeavour to preserve and promote the rich literary heritage of the State, was institutiolized in the year 1990.

Born in 1937 at Titabor, Dutta has to his credit several collection of poems – Somdhirir Sowarani Aru Anya Kavita (1981), Manuha Anukule (2000), Pal Anupalar Anch (2007); and two collection of critical essays – Nirbasito Xomalosa (2011), Mor Prabandha (2014). He also edited an anthology of Assamese poetry – One Hundred Years of Assamese Poetry (2007).

After finishing his schooling from Mihiram Saikia High School at Titabor, he completed the Intermediate Science Exam from Cotton College in 1954. He then went on to complete his BA in English from Cotton College and did his MA in English literature from the University of Calcutta.

He served as lecturer and Reader in institutions like JB College and Gauhati University.

Dutta’s poetry is marked by unusual and impressive imagery, density of form and his own characteristic poetic diction that mages to project the tremor and confusion of our age without being cynical.

Recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award in the year 2004 and Padmath Vidya Vinod Smriti Puraskar in the year 2013, Dutta participated in the Kabi Bharati Poet’s Conference in Bhopal and several poetry conferences held in New Delhi, Bangalore and Kolkata, organized by Sahitya Akademi.

He was elected as the president of the Kabi Sammilan of the Axom Xahitya Xabha’s Doomduma session in 1989. He also attended the World Poetry Conference held at Cheni (then Madras) in 1976. The 25th Assam Valley Literary Award for the year 2014 will be formally presented to Dutta at a function to be held here in March next.

M’Tem will be formally given the Prab Barua Art Award for the year 2014 at a function to held here on February 22 next.
