From Our Correspondent

MANGALDAI, January 2: A father–son duo met with the watery grave in Mangaldai, casting a spell of gloom in the town.

As reported, Bolo Ram Mandal (45), a teacher of New Town LP School and a resident of Santipur here was going towards the Brahmaputra river bank at Dakhin Mowamari on his motor cycle to celebrate the New Year with his son, Debashish Mandal (15). They took cooked food items with them prepared by Debashish’s mother.

At about 3.30 pm, Debashish somehow slipped and fell into the river. Bolo too jumped into the river to save his son, but unfortutely they were reported drowned.

On seeing the motor cycle and other materials, including the food items, lying abandoned on the river bank, people assembled in the spot and made a hue and cry. They started a rescue operation and informed the matter to the police and district administration. Though the SDRF personnel immediately launched a rescue operation, the father–son duo remained untraced till this morning.

The search operation was resumed today with the help of local villagers and the two bodies were fished out this morning.

Debashish was a student of IX standard in Donbosco, Mangaldai and was a meritorious student of the school.
