By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, January 2: As many as 12 houses were charred into ashes within half an hour at Sarabbhati in the city today. There was no casualty as most of the people staying in the houses given on rent are hawkers like thelawalas and chawalas who were away from their houses during the daytime.

According to sources, the fire broke out due to the blast of a cylinder in the house of a person from where the fire spread and caught the nearby houses. Four fire tenders that reached the spot prevented the fire from spreading to the nearby buildings. However, the windows of three nearby buildings were damaged by the fire.

Though there was no casualty, property worth about Rs 4  lakh was destroyed.
