’Activities of some tarnished the image of the traditiol customary post’

Staff Correspondent

Shillong, January 3: The “deceitful style” of functioning of a few Rangbah Shnongs (headmen) has tarnished the image of the traditiol customary post. This was observed by a gathering of local headmen.

One such case is the recent order of the Rangbah Shnong of a village to a school headmaster to block the school report card of four siblings on grounds that their parents have been ostracized. Another cited the numerous cases of ostracizing of families on flimsy grounds, denying families benefits under the public distribution system and the corrupt practices of taking cuts from the land transactions between people. These examples were cited by the former Deputy Chief Minister (in charge of law) BM Lanong on Saturday, even as he added that these are instances that tarnish the dignity of the traditiol customary post.

This outright talk in front of 150 Rangbah Shnongs came at a time when such practices have become an almost ratified convention in some parts of the State. Even though the post of Rangbah Shnong is a non–salaried one, there are villages where people fight for it. The reason should be well understood.
