Taxi drivers pulled up for breaking rules

From our Staff Reporter

DIBRUGARH, January 8: Erring drivers of three and four wheeler taxis in the town are facing the heat with the office of the District Transport Officer (DTO) here continuing to keep a close eye on the implementation of its directives.

In the latest drive undertaken on Wednesday, the office pulled up the drivers of 16 small passenger carrying vehicles like wingers, autos and Magic. They were fined for various offences, like not paying tax, not having permits and fitness certificates. Cases were registered against seven heavy motor vehicles. Fine of more than Rs 50,000 has been realized till today.

The office of the DTO had announced in November last year that three and four wheeler taxis would have to follow a colour scheme according to the seven circles in the district where they had permits to ply. The officials are trying to ensure that the directive is followed and the autos do not run on routes and places where they do not hold permission. The drivers of these vehicles will also have to don uniforms. However, the rule is yet to be followed by the concerned individuals.

Meanwhile, the transport officials have plans to carry out a drive to ensure that vehicles display the list of fares, as fixed by the State Government, as is the rule and not doing so is considered an offence.
