Lakhimpur Congress assails Modi and Sonowal for failure to fulfil promises

A CORRESPONDENT

LAKHIMPUR, May 29: “Narendra Modi is such a person who acts quite contradictorily to what he states. He collected votes from the people of Northeast with false promises in order to gain power at the Centre but he could not do what he had promised to do for the people of the region. His four-year old Union government and Sarbananda Sonowal’s two-year old State government have comprehensively failed to fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the country and the State respectively,” stated Dr Joy Prakash Das, the president of the Lakhimpur District Congress Committee, at a press meet held at North Lakhimpur Press Club on Tuesday while severely criticizing the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister for various issues.

Lambasting the Prime Minister, Dr Das said that Narendra Modi promised to reduce the fuel prices in his election campaigns if his party came to power at the Centre. “But the Prime Minister is now pushing the people of the nation, especially the people of Assam, to a miserable condition by rising fuel prices day-by-day. Why have the fuel prices been hiked at a time when the price is low in the international market? It is the plan of the BJP for collecting money to contest in the next parliamentary election,” he alleged.

He also stated that Modi was unable to keep his promise of providing employment to two crore unemployed youths of the nation every year. “He has been unable to create employment opportunities for just two lakh youths of the country during the last four years. He has turned to be the weakest Prime Minister of India regarding the employment issue,” said Dr Das. He said that the Congress party would observe Betrayal Day on June 6 to protest against the betrayal of Narendra Modi and BJP in the name of ruling the country. On the other hand, the activists of the party will take out a cycle rally in this regard on June 9.

The Lakhimpur District Congress Committee president, in the press meet, strongly criticized Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, alleging him to be involved in the activities prone to destroying Assam and the Assamese people by observing a mysterious silence with regard to the issue of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. “He, along with Himanta Biswa Sarma, is not hesitating to sacrifice the interest of the State and the community just to hold on to power,” he said.

Dr Das also criticized State Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya as he terminated the promise quoted in BJP’s vision document to reward scooty to meritorious girl students who perform well in the HS exam. “During the terms of the Congress government, laptops and computers were gifted to the students who secured even second division in the HSLC exam. I challenge Sarbananda Sonowal and his government, which grabbed power with promise of bringing change in the State, to show courage by giving the same to students passing the HSLC exam in third division,” said Dr Das.

Further, he disclosed APCC president Ripun Bora’s order of appointing Khagen Gogoi, the activist of the anti-foreigner movement of Assam who recently joined in the party, as one of the spokespersons of APCC to deal with the issues of north Assam except Darrang. Addressing the press meet, Gogoi stressed the fall of Sarbananda Sonowal’s government by heralding a new political environment as APCC president Ripun Borah proposed. He stated that the anti-Assamese activities of BJP governments at the Centre and the State were paving the way for Congress to regain power.
