NRC UPDATE

A CORRESPONDENT

NEW DELHI, June 12: With hardly two weeks left for the publication of the second draft of NRC, two senior officials from New Delhi would visit Assam to take stock of the overall situation.

The officials including Satyendra Garg, Joint Secretary (Northeast) and Sailesh, Registrar General of India would review the security arrangements in the State and also meet all stake holders related to the NRC update process.

The decision to send the two senior officials was conveyed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to a delegation of Assam Congress Legislature Party (ACLP) in Delhi on Tuesday. The delegation was led by Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia. Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also accompanied the delegation.

“We got positive feedback from the Home Minister. He assured us that all stakeholders will be consulted in the NRC update process,” said APCC president Ripun Bora.

Pointing to the move to link the NRC process with proceedings in the Foreigners’ Tribunal, the Congress delegation said that a list specifying names for non-inclusion in the final draft of the NRC has been sent to various NRC Seva Kendras.

The Congress delegation met RGI Sailesh and on Monday the members also called on President Ramnath Kovind and raised their concern over the NRC update process.
