GUWAHATI: The APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Congress Committee) on Wednesday alleged Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal of being involved in the sub-inspector of police (SI) recruitment scam. Demanding his resignation, APCC president Ripun Bora alleged, "The CM and his Officer on Special Duty Ranjit Mazumdar are directly involved with the scam. Therefore, he should resign from his position."

In this regard, hundreds of party workers staged a protest at Manabendra Sarma Complex, Dispur and blamed the government for multiple recruitment-related scandals.

Questioning how the question papers were leaked under the supervision of then SLPRB chief Pradip Kumar, Bora said though the former has resigned, why has the government not taken any action against him?

He demanded that the SI recruitment scam must be investigated by the sitting judge of the Gauhati High Court. As the protest was intensified at the Manabendra Sarma Complex and the workers tried to take out a rally, the police and paramilitary forces intervened and neutralized the situation.

According to reports, several workers were injured and hundreds were detained including Bora. The detained workers were taken to 10th APBn at Kahilipara.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia said Sonowal should resign on moral grounds and seek a fresh mandate from the people of Assam. Saikia condemned the incident of alleged lathi-charge by the police against Congress leaders and workers, as well as their subsequent detention, after they assembled to protest.

He termed the police's action of barging inside the Congress's office campus to allegedly beat up the protestors as an assault on the citizens' Constitutional right to assemble and protest peacefully and demanded an enquiry into the incident.

Saikia stated that after coming to power, the government headed by Sonowal had been depriving eligible youths of the State by operating illegal syndicates pertaining to recruitment in various government departments and the SI recruitment scam was the latest example of this racket. The nefarious racket was being operated from the Chief Minister's Secretariat and various leaders and workers of the BJP were involved in it, he added.
