GUWAHATI: The city has long struggled with the issue of streetlights. Many streets have been under the shadow of non-functional streetlights, which causes a major problem among the residents of the city. Despite numerous complaints lodged by the people, the situation remains the same. Working on residents' plight, the installation of the streetlights at various parts and streets of the city has already started. In the coming 6-7 months, more than 24,600 streetlights will be installed in various lanes and bylanes. The whole project of installation will be monitored under the Central Command Control and Monitoring System (CCMS), which has aimed to cover about 70 per cent of the city. The project cost is approximately Rs. 85 crore.
The installation will be carried out in 6 divisions, where in 1-4 divisions, more than 2000 streetlights will be installed. Important areas like Dispur, Basistha, Hatigaon, and Kahilipara will be covered under Division 5, where more than 11,000 streetlights will be installed. Under Division 6, 6,000 streetlights will be installed.
According to an official, "the whole project was surveyed under the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) last year. We will undertake the installation of the streetlights as per the requirements of the places accordingly. It is a tender-based project, and once all the official works are done, the installation will be undertaken. We will also keep in mind that those CFL lights that have been damaged will be replaced by LED lights."
According to a resident, "If this project turns out to be a success, then it will be beneficial for the people. There are areas that remain dark, and it becomes a problem for commuters to pass by. With this installation, we hope that the streets remain illuminated for the rest of the year and in the coming years."
Another official said that the implementation of CCMS will reduce the time and cost associated with the maintenance of the street lights. "At present, to maintain the lights, either engineers have to keep rounding each area or residents have to file complaints, but after the completion of this project, we will be able to check every light from a control room and resolve issues associated with it".
Talking to the media, one more resident said, "The installation process is fine, but the concern is the durability of the lights. If it functions well, it will be a boon for us, and if it still lags then we will be left to file complaints again and again."
