GUWAHATI: Due to the continuing building of the Maligaon flyover, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma encouraged worshippers not to attend Kamakhya Temple at night during the Ambubachi Mela on Thursday.

This comes after the chief minister set a timetable for the completion of the flyover, which has generated massive traffic congestion since its construction began, and multiple disasters have been reported.

Residents in and around Guwahati's Maligaon region are anxious that the approaching Ambubachi Mela may cause considerable traffic congestion and even accidents, as employees have been directed to continue working on the Maligaon overpass from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. If visitors visit the temple during construction work hours, the work may be postponed to guarantee the public's safety.

Residents in and around Guwahati's Maligaon neighbourhood are concerned that the approaching Ambubachi Mela would cause significant traffic congestion and even accidents, as workers on the Maligaon flyover have been told to continue working from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. If visitors come to the temple during construction hours, the work may be halted to ensure the public's safety.

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma met with officials from the Public Works Department (PWD - Roads) and contractors to examine the development of the Maligaon and Zoo Road flyovers in an effort to improve transportation infrastructure and reduce traffic congestion.

The Chief Minister directed that the Maligaon flyover be completed by July 31, 2023, and the Zoo Road flyover be completed by August 31, 2023, while emphasising the importance of rigorous adherence to safety regulations.

However, several disasters have happened during the continuing work, resulting in falling materials damaging vehicles and hurting at least two passengers. As a result, Chief Minister Sarma emphasised the need of maintaining severe safety measures throughout the construction process in order to protect the safety of workers and the general public.
