GUWAHATI: State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Das has said that the Congress has taken the lockdown as a political issue.

Addressing the media in his residence here on Wednesday, Dass said, "The Maharashtra government under the Congress has imposed lockdown in the State till July 31. The BJP has not opposed the move. However, in Guwahati lockdown has been imposed to break the COVID-19 chain. The Congress has taken it as a political issue. The party keeps making political comments on the lockdown."

Thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dass said, "The Premier has extended benefits to the farmers of the country. Assam will get Rs 2,236 crore through the announcement, benefiting 2.50 crore people belonging to 58 lakh families. Under this, each farmers' family will get 5 kg rice and 1 kg dal every month."

Meanwhile, Dass was caught in a controversy regarding his swab test. Dass himself disclosed in the press meet that he and his family members had given swab samples on Tuesday for COVID test. He had to take such a step as four of his escorts tested COVID-19 positive.

To this the reporters asked him as to why he was not in isolation in accordance with COVID protocol, he fumbled not being able to give any satisfactory reply. However, during the press meet a message came that he tested corona negative. While addressing the media later, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said when asked that nobody should violate health guidelines.
