New Delhi: The last date to link your Permanent Account Number (PAN) with the Aadhaar card is 31st March, so if you have not done the same, do it today to avoid penalties and other issues.

Linking the 10 digits alphanumeric number issued by the IT (Income Tax) Department with the 12 digit number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has been made mandatory for are tax-related work.

Every individual, who has a PAN is considered eligible to obtain an Aadhaar Card of unique identity and link both by visiting the income tax portal. They can also check the status of PAN-Aadhaar linkage in the same portal.

Here are the important points to know if you miss the deadline of the PAN-Aadhaar Link:

Non-linking of PAN with Aadhar on or before the last date would attract a penalty of Rs 1000 but taxpayers can use it for filing Income tax returns for one more year till March 2023.

A late fine of Rupees 500 will be imposed for the first three months after the last date starting from 1st April but thereafter it will cost Rupees 1000.

If the PAN card becomes inactive the cardholders will be restricted in completing any financial transactions.

According to the circular released by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), PAN not found linked with Aadhar will become inoperative after 31st March 2023.

However, the CBDT has restricted the penalty only to late fees and said PAN will be operative with no transactions getting affected.

The PAN and Aadhar linkage will be beneficial in curbing tax evasion and in eliminating duplicate PAN.

It may be mentioned that earlier, the last date for completing PAN-Aadhaar linkage was 30th September 2021 but the CBDT has extended it by three months up to 31st March 2022.
