David Syiemlieh to take charge as chairman of UPSC

SHILLONG, Jan 2: Professor David Reade Syiemlieh, a renowned and immaculate academician from Shillong will take charge as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Wednesday. As per the official communiqué issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), New Delhi on Monday, “The President has appointed Prof. David R Syiemlieh, Member, Union Public Service Commission, to perform the duties of the post of Chairman, Union Public Service Commission, with effect from the forenoon of January 4, 2017 till further orders or till completion of his term as member on Jan 21, 2018, whichever, is earlier.

A forthright gentleman, Syiemlieh has rose to the top echelon of the most revered institution of the country due to his unquestioble qualities in the spheres that he has ventured into in his illustrious career.

The Sentinel spoke to him over the phone on Monday and he said, “I am elated to have advanced to the position after serving for four years in the UPSC.” Asked on any innovative thinking as the head of the commission that determines the people known as skeletal frame of democracy, Syiemlieh said, “Everything is very well set in our system and that order will be carried out forward”.

Syiemlieh will be the second person from Shillong to occupy such a position in the UPSC.  The first was a high calibre woman Rose Millian Bathew.
