SIVASAGAR, September 6: In protest against the State Government’s utter negligence towards the demands made by the All Assam Mandal Kangu Sanmilani to arrest Baghbor MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed and a statement from the government in the July 30, 2016 case where Md. Nurul Islam, a revenue department employee in Barpeta district was allegedly abused and assaulted by the MLA, the Sivasagar district unit of the Sanmilanli started their second phase of five-day long strike on Tuesday which will continue till September 10, 2016.

Various important official activities like land mutation, partition, collection and verification of survey data along with the proceedings of several kinds of government certificates like permanent residential certificates, income certificates and inspection reports were kept pending in several circle offices and the establishments of civil administration due to the protest.

This next phase comes after a three-day strike from August 29 to August 31, 2016.

Binod Gogoi, secretary of Sivasagar District unit of the Sanmilani told The Sentinel that following a failure of the State Government to come up with any results to our demands, this next phase of strike was staged.

A crimil case against the MLA was registered at Kolgosia police station on July 31 after Islam lodged an FIR. He alleged that the MLA had hurled verbal abuses at him and also assaulted and threatened him before a crowd on July 30 when Sherman Ali Ahmed visited Kismat Mayanbari riverbank to take stock of the flood relief measures.

Criticizing the police and government iction in the case, Gogoi said that the Sanmilani would resort to another cease work for an indefinite period from September 14, if their demands were not fulfilled.
