Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has been rated as the most popular Chief Minister among the statesmen who emerged victorious in the Assembly polls in May 2021.

As per the latest survey conducted by CVoter, the Assam CM has leapfrogged to the top spot among the chiefs of four states (West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu) and one Union Territory (Puducherry).

The respondents were asked to rank the Chief Ministers of their respective states based on their performances during the survey.

More than 43% of the respondents in Assam expressed that they were satisfied with the performance of Himanta Biswa Sarma while more than 41% stated the same in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The performance of the Assam CM was rated as satisfactory by 37 per cent of the respondents in the state while around 18% of respondents were dissatisfied with his performance, citing the polarized nature of politics in Assam.

It is worth noting that Himanta deserted the Congress party in 2015 to join the BJP and he played a vital role in the saffron party's historic win in Assam's 2016 Assembly elections. It was historic because prior to 2016, the BJP never came to power in Assam.

Besides his instrumental contribution in Assam, he has also helped the BJP to stitch a coalition in the northeastern region, in what has been named as the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) which came into existence on May 24, 2016.

Himanta, who founded the alliance, was appointed as the convenor of the front and the chairperson of this alliance is BJP President JP Nadda.
