DIBRUGARH: Several trade unions of the State in response to the nationwide general strike called by a joint committee of 10 Central trade unions, staged a demonstration in Dibrugarh on Monday. The state units of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS), Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) held a massive demonstration at the Mancotta Field in Dibrugarh on Monday against the “anti-people” policies of the government.

The trade unions demanded the scrapping of the four labour codes, which were passed by Parliament in 2019 and 2020 and are yet to be implemented. It also called for the repeal of the farm laws, stopping of privatisation and reduction in the central excise duty on petroleum products among others. It also called for the rollback of the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP), which is a policy to lease government assets to private parties.

Participating in the rally, former Union Minister and ACMS president Paban Singh Ghatowar called for legally guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops along with procurement, hike of minimum daily wages for Assam tea garden workers, loan waivers for all the peasant households, eradication of unemployment and enactment of employment as fundamental right, the strengthening of MGNREGS with 200 days of job per year and Rs 600 as daily wage, the halt of privatisation of public sector units and that of price rise.

Participating in the rally former Congress MLA and ACMS leader Raju Sahu called for the scrapping of the four labour codes namely the Code on Wages, 2019, the Industrial Relations Code, 2020, the Code on Social Security, 2020 and the Occupational Safety, Health & Working Conditions Code, 2020, saying that it will encourage ‘hire and fire’ policy by employers.
