TINSUKIA: “Caste system, gender discrimination and superstition that prevailed in India prior to Independence, still exist in the Indian society,” said noted progressive writer and critic Dr Paramananda Mazumdar during the 20th foundation day programme of Ellora Vigyan Mancha at Tinsukia College, in association with IQAC, on Sunday in presence of a distinguished gathering. He further said that these factors were hindering the progress and development of the country.

Speaking on the topic ‘Spread of rationalistic thought in Assam-Hem Baruah and later times’, Dr Mazumdar laid an in-depth researched presentation of Hem Barua’s philosophy while citing several key points against the prejudices inflicting then despite hailing from Brahmin caste and how he stood against the repression meted out to women. Dr Mazumdar pointed out that in the later period several literary stalwarts like Chandra Prabha Saikiani, Ambikagiri Roychoudhury voiced against discrimination. A society cannot progress till the women get dignity at par with their men counterparts, viewed Dr Mazumder.

In keeping with the objective of ElloraVigyan Mancha, another speaker, Dr Anuradha Baruah, head of the Anatomy Department, Assam Medical College, spoke on ‘Contribution of body and organ donation after death in Medical Sciences’. She elaborated the procedure adopted in preservation and disposal of remains of dead persons with dignity and honour without disclosing the identity. The programme was moderated by Prof Rana Changmai, president of Tinsukia branch of Ellora Vigyan Mancha.
