Nawa Bihan Samaj of Lakhimpur observes International Widows’ Day

LAKHIMPUR: Nawa Bihan Samaj (NBS) of Lakhimpur district observed the International Widows’ Day on Sunday. The programme on this occasion was organized at the Morning Star English School premises at Amapara Chariali near Koilamari Tea Estate of the district. The programme was attended by the former president of Joyhing Gaon Panchayat, Birson Gowala, teacher and social worker George Tirkey along with social activists Mary Topno, Angela Roota and the members of the NBS.

NBS secretary Godfrey Hereh welcomed all the guests and the participants of the programme by delivering the welcome address. In his speech, he highlighted the significance of the event. He said that there was need to support and help the single women as most of the time they were neglected and hence their issues and problems always remained in the dark. He further declared that his organization had chalked out a plan to work for the single women to mitigate their problems and to give them a dignified life.

Former gaon panchayat president Birson Gowala highlighted the government schemes and facilities for widows and old-aged women provided through gaon panchayats. In his speech, he suggested that women should visit the panchayat offices and participate in the gram sabha meetings organized under the gaon panchayats. Over 100 widows participated in the programme where the participants took a resolution to constitute a common forum for them in the upcoming days.
