GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Geology and Mining has planned to auction 22 new mineral blocks to augment revenue generation.

Several mineral blocks in the state have been lying unused. The Directorate is now ready to auction the blocks in this financial year for mining activities.

According to sources in the Directorate, the Directorate has decided to auction 16 blocks of granite, one block of China clay, two blocks of glass sand, two blocks of quartzite, and one block of sandstone. The Directorate expects that if everything goes as planned, these mineral blocks will fetch the government revenue amounting to Rs 33.61 crore annually.

The Directorate of Geology and Mining, under the administrative control of the Mines and Minerals Department, is one of the most revenue-earning directorates in the state.

The Directorate is also carrying out various investigation programmes, like the geographical investigation of limestone deposits in Voterolansho, sillimanite deposits in Samelangsho in the Karbi Anglong district, iron deposits at Lengupara in the Goalpara district, and coal deposits at Larbo in the Karbi Anglong district. An MoU has been signed with MECL for non-coal minerals, and accordingly, MECL has started exploration of sillimanite in the Chipilangsho area in the Karbi Anglong district.
