GUWAHATI: In view of the current flood and landslide situation in the State, Chief Secretary Jishnu Barua on Saturday reviewed the flood preparedness along with Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), even as the overall death toll in the first phase of flood and resultant landslides climbed to 18.

The Chief Secretary further expedited the response and recovery services by deployment of additional resources and support system to the severely-affected districts. Some major decisions have been taken in the last 24 hours in this regard.

The Public Health Engineering Department has been directed to make arrangements to supply sufficient water to over 4,000 pre-identified relief camps in the State, while the ASDMA has deployed nodal officers along with the satellite phones for sharing of information from the disaster sites to test the emergency communication.

Meanwhile, the NHAI has assured to restore the National Highway from Jatinga to Harangajao in Dima Hasao district within one week.

According to official sources, a population of 8,39,691 of 3,246 villages in 32 districts has been affected by the ongoing floods.
