GUWAHATI: The State Government is contemplating providing subsidized tea to the ration cardholders along with rice and flour.
In this regard, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "We will take such a decision only after a thorough discussion with tea garden managements. We need to ensure that they can provide such a huge quantity of tea. If everything goes as planned, beneficiaries will get tea at Rs 100/150 per kg."
The state has 52 lakh ration-holding families. Around ten lakh ration card-holding families will be added to the list by December. On the other hand, the state produces around seven million kg of tea annually, which is around half of the country's total tea production. The state also generates annual foreign exchange estimated at Rs 3,000 crore.
