GUWAHATI: The dearth of Assamese writers for textbooks is a problem for the Assam High Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). The Council follows NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) books under the CBSE (Central Board Secondary Education) syllabi.

Talking to this reporter, an AHSEC officer said, "The problems of textbooks in Assamese are multi-pronged. Most of the writers fail to meet the time stipulation recorded in agreements. We need to keep reminding them when they miss the target schedule. The biggest problem with most of them is the Assamese language they write. Imperfection apart, the languages of most of them do not match the target students. They lack an index study that forces a person to think about the material instead of simply looking over it. It is why students, as often as not, get textbooks of various subjects in Assamese late."

The official further said, "NECERT keeps reviewing its books frequently, and we need to do it in sync with them. Recently, we reviewed physics and chemistry textbooks, changed the textbook 'banking' and published a new textbook named 'finance' instead. Swadesh Adhyoyon is a new subject we have introduced. We also introduced another new textbook of 'Anthropology'. We did it amid many hurdles, mostly from writers of Assamese textbooks."
