GUWAHATI: Along with the rest of the country, onion prices have gone up in Assam in post-Navratri. Now, onion prices in Guwahati range from Rs 45-60 per kg based on varieties.

When contacted, retailers in various markets in Guwahati said that they had to buy the red onion at the rate of Rs 53-55 per kg and sell it at Rs 60 per kg today. They had to buy the white onions at a rate of Rs 42-47 per kg and sell them for Rs 45-50 per kg.

Wholesalers, on the other hand, said that they import onions from Bangaluru, Nasik, Patna, and Rajasthan, which have hiked onion prices recently. They said that the price of onions increased by 25-50 percent in the national capital region. "The hike in the price of onions is up to Rs 1,500 per quintal, and there is no likelihood of a fall in prices till December, when new crops will be available in the market," one of the wholesalers in Guwahati said.

However, the wholesale price line at the Pamohi fruit and vegetable market under the Assam State Agriculture Marketing Board (ASAMB) differs from other areas in Guwahati. According to today's price list, the price of the Bangaluru onion is Rs 4,400 per quintal, the Patna variety is Rs 4,200 per quintal, and the Nasik variety is Rs 4,000 per quintal. On October 1, the prices were Rs 3,700 per quintal for the Bangaluru variety, Rs 3,200 per quintal for the Nasik variety, and Rs 3,600 per quintal for the Patna variety.
