Praneswar Basumatary lost twice to BJP's Padma Hazarika in the Assam Assembly Elections of 2016 and 2006. In 2001, Basumatary defeated Padma Hazarika who was contesting on AGP ticket. In 1996 again, Basumatary was defeated by Padma Hazarika contesting the elections in AGP ticket. Fought Assam Assembly Elections 4 times – 1996, 2001, 2006, 2016.
